Severe Tropical Storm "MERANTI" is about to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and it will be named "FERDIE".


Weather bureau PAGASA said before noon Sunday that a severe tropical storm was about to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

It said severe tropical storm "Meranti" will be named locally as Ferdie when it enters the PAR.

It said that as of 10 a.m., the storm's center was estimated at 1,410 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 105 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 135 kph.

The storm was forecast to move west northwest at 20 kph.



The weather bureau said the estimated rainfall amount within the storm's 300-kilometer diameter was moderate to heavy.

The storm was still too far to affect the country. It is also not expected to make landfall.

Its center's estimated location by Monday morning was 955 km east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora; by Tuesday morning at 395 km east southeast of Basco, Batanes; and more 140 kilometers west of Itbayat, Batanes by Wednesdsay morning.

The storm is expected to exit the PAR by Thursday morning
