'Habagat' death toll hits 13, close to 18,000 in evacuation centers


MANILA - The death toll from floods and landslides caused by days of monsoon rains in Luzon has risen to 13, while nearly 18,000 remain in evacuation centers, the disaster monitoring agency said Wednesday.
Six people were hurt while nine others were missing, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.
The NDRRMC said 17,896 persons were still in evacuation centers. Floods and landslides displaced a total of 55,963 families or 262,271 individuals were displaced by rains in Regions I, III, VI, Calabarzon, Metro Manila, and Cordillera.
Monsoon rains will persist over the provinces of Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac and Pampanga while moderate rains and thunderstorms are expected in Metro Manila, according to the state weather bureau.
In its 8 a.m. report, the NDRRMC said a 68-year-old resident of Januiay, Iloilo drowned in the Malbug River on August 10.
The body 11-year-old child was found in the Nagtahan Pumping Station in Manila on August 12, the NDRMMC said,.
Two teenagers and a man died due to the collapse of rain-drenched structures in Quezon City and Manila last Saturday.
On the same day, two construction workers drowned in floods at the Sumag River Tunnel in General Nakar, Quezon.      
A fisherman drowned Saturday after sailed off Brook's Point, Palawan despite the bad weather.
In San Ildefonso, Bulacan, a 74-year-old farmer who was moving his carabao to safer ground drowned in the Maasim River.
The body of a man who died from drowning was found along the banks of the Tarapiche River in Maragondon, Cavite Sunday.
A family of three in Nasugbu, Batangas died from electrocution on Monday.
Floods and landslides also damaged 46 houses in Bataan, Negros Occidental, Iloilo and Rizal provinces. Nineteen flooded roads were not passable to all vehicles.
Several local governments cancelled classes on Wednesday due to the bad weather.
