MANILA - A deadly combination of drugs and alcohol was what fueled last weekend's brutal murder of a young nurse, the chief of the Quezon City police said on Wednesday.
The confessed killer surrendered to village officials, then the police, and was presented to media on Wednesday morning.
Police Supt. Guillermo Eleazar presented the suspect, Jeffrey Abalos Guarin of Barangay Kristong Hari in QC, at a press conference in Camp Karingal.
Two relatives of Guarin's victim, nurse September Ann Paz, were at the briefing.
According to Barangay Kagawad Rogelio Jablo, the suspect had intended to rob Paz's residence in the evening of August 20, but panicked when the nurse woke up. In the ensuing commotion, the victim was stabbed no less than 12 times.
Her cousin Erik Paz Gonzales said that September, who worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Quezon City, was a dutiful daughter, studious, obedient, and helpful to relatives.
"Masipag mag-aral at matulungin sa magulang, di lang sa magulang kundi pati sa mga kamag-anak, nakapa-inosenteng bata [Very studious, helpful to her parents and others; a very innocent child]."
"Every time I come home for a vacation from the US, we always have get-togethers - not just us first cousins but our extended families. They're always happy occasions, and September was always there to cheer us up," Eric said. "Nakapanghihinayang [what a pity]."
He told InterAksyon: "Hindi ako makapagsalita sa mga magulang niya, pero ako personally I will support the campaign against illegal drugs and crime all the way."
Guarin cried in front of reporters at the police press conference.

September used to stay in the house of relatives, but had opted to share a Quezon City apartment with a colleague because it was nearer her work.
On the night of her murder, she was sleeping alone in the apartment because her flatmate was on duty at the hospital.
Kristong Hari Barangay councilor Rogelio Jablo, who facilitated the surrender of suspect Guarin, said: "Sinabi niya sa akin na nabigla lamang siya nang magising ang biktima, kaya pinagsasasaksak na niya; nakakita siya ng kutsilyo sa kwarto, dahil na din sa sobrang alak at maaring droga [The suspect told me he panicked when the victim woke up so he stabbed her with a knife he saw in the room; he had taken drugs and alcohol
