The House of Representatives will open on Tuesday its investigation into allegations the illegal drug trade was being run from the national penitentiary during Senator Leila de Lima's tenure as justice secretary, a lawmaker leading the inquiry said.
The hearing will start one day after President Rodrigo Duterte's allies in the Senate ousted De Lima from a committee that was investigating the hundreds of deaths linked to his war on drugs.
"I-establish natin, mayroon ba talagang drug syndicate doon, nag-o-operate ba sila talaga doon, nagma-manufacture ba sila doon [We will establish if there truly is a drug syndicated there, if they operate or manufacture there]," said Oriental Mindoro Rep. and House justice committee chairman Reynaldo Umali.
"Pagkatapos po niyan, bakit nangyari ito, bakit napayagan itong pangyayari ito. Iyung culpability, liability po ng mga nangangasiwa natin ay aalamin din natin [After that, we will look into why this was allowed. We’ll also determine the culpability, liability of supervising officials]," he told DDZMM.
