House Speaker Alvarez on Barbers-Pichay heated exchange: Nahiya ako

"Nahiya ako."

That was how House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez felt after learning about the Barbers-Pichay incident on Wednesday.

Surigao del Norte Rep. Ace Barbers and Surigao del Sur Rep. Prospero Pichay cursed at each other and almost came to blows during a meeting of the House committee on constitutional amendments Wednesday afternoon.

Alvarez said he has no plans of talking to the two congressmen and would rather let the House committee on ethics act on the issue.

Pichay plans to file a complaint against Barbers before the House ethics committee for conduct unbecoming a congressman.

"They're old enough para maintindihan 'yung ginawa nila," said Alvarez.

Alvarez also has no plans to issue a memo to remind the congressmen how they should act.

"Hindi magandang panoorin. Hindi dapat nangyari. Siguro naman aahon tayo pagkatapos. At hindi dapat maulit," Alvarez added.

After learning of the incident, House Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas immediately requested for a copy of the video.

Fariñas plans to talks to Barbers and Pichay next week. Both are members of the majority bloc.

"I will have to talk to them and ask them what happened. And perhaps if they can have a happy ending about it. Although I read that Congressman Pichay is contemplating of filing a case with the ethics committee. That's his right," said Fariñas.

Like the Speaker, Fariñas felt embarrassed.

"Oo naman. Oo naman. Of course, it reflects on us dahil they're members," he said.
